An Expansion Joint is a device used to relieve stresses in piping/ducting systems, vessels and/or chutes by absorbing dimensional changes in single and/or multiple planes, which are caused by thermal expansion and vibration.

When designing an Expansion Joint into any system, it is very important to know the operating conditions in each and every area where an Expansion Joint will be installed. This information is imperative as there are many types of Expansion Joints that are available and it is important to make sure that the right choice and style is made.

Rubber (Elastomeric) Expansion Joints can be manufactured with a variety of Elastomers and varying reinforcements depending on the Pressure Ratings. They provide a wide range of movement in either single or multiple arch type constructions.
Rubber Expansion Joints isolate noise and vibration from various types of equipment and can be PTFE lined for additional chemical resistance. Rubber Expansion Joints can provide for controlled movement, while reducing noise and vibration. They provide great protection to a piping system from damage due to vibration and movement. 

Rubber Expansion Joints are designed and manufactured to CSA Z299.3 Quality Program Standards.

Fabric Expansion Joints offer superior flexibility in handling large thermal movements, in a relatively short space. They are excellent for vibration isolation and also help reduce mechanical noise transmission. Fabric Expansion Joints are available in various material and designs with no real size restrictions. Expansion Joints can be supplied with appropriate metal work (such as angles, baffles and retaining bars) for ease of installation at site.

Fabric Expansion Joints are typically broken down into three different groups: Elastomeric, Composite, and Fluoropolymer.

Elastomeric: These types of Expansion Joints are constructed with high strength fabric and/or wire reinforcements vulcanized with various elastomers such as Viton ® EPDM, Neoprene, and Silicone to name a few.

Total belt thickness and number of reinforcing plies may vary depending on application conditions and design. 

An Elastomeric Viton® type Expansion Joint will be typically used in Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) systems or wet, acidic, corrosive environments.All Viton® Expansion Joints are supplied with DuPont® “Genuine Viton® Labels”  affixed to the material for proof of authenticity.


Composite: These types of Expansion Joints are typically designed for use where system temperature is continuously operating at hot elevated temperatures – Consult factory for details.

The elevated temperatures automatically call for a composite type of flexible element to be designed for the membrane. A composite Expansion Joint is made up of different layers consisting of the Gas Seal Membrane, Insulating Layers, Insulation Retaining Layer and a Flange Gasket. The insulating layers are only required where the system temperature exceeds the range of the gas seal membrane.

Layers of Composite Expansion Joints

Outer Layer – Gas Seal Membrane is the outer cover of the Expansion Joint and is designed to handle the system pressure and chemical attack. The flexibility of the cover is crucial to handle the movements but they do have temperature limitations.

Insulating Layers provide a thermal barrier to reduce the temperature to the Gas Seal Membrane. This layer is designed to ensure that the temperature of the Gas Seal Membrane does not exceed its maximum service temperature.

Insulation Retainer Layer is the layer that keeps the insulating layers in place.

Flange Gasket protects the gas seal membrane from thermal degradation which may be caused by hot metal flanges and back up bars.

Fluoropolymer: These materials are normally designed for use where the system is wet and temperatures are continuously operating to 600°F, with intermittent excursions to 655°F. This is normally associated with wet corrosive applications. Our PTFE composites and laminates are engineered to survive corrosive environments and severe temperature fluctuations along with elevated pressures.

PTFE Expansion Joints are designed to compensate for thermal growth or vibration in piping systems conveying highly corrosive chemicals or acid.
PTFE Expansion Joints also offer low spring rates resulting in low reaction forces on adjacent piping, nozzles, structures and equipment.

They are very resistant to attack from a variety of chemicals and acids.

PTFE Expansion Joints are well suited for use on non-metallic piping systems such as FRP, glass lined, PTFE lined, kynar, etc.
